Century Farm Honors

By The Tribune

"Todd and Ame West of Perry Township's West Orchards are the proud recipients of a special certificate recognizing their Century Farm. Signed by Governor John R. Kasich and director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the certificate is meant to be kept with their historic documents and be passed down to future generations. It was the only Lake County Century Farm named in 2011 and it joined 51 others in the state.

Todd and his wife, Ame, are the fifth generation of Wests to farm this land -- established by the family in 1891. Today their 66 acres are less than half that farmed by Todd's dad, Richard and his uncle, Donald, now retired. Because the farm is closer to Lake Erie than many others, their weather is moderated by the lake which helps them escape late spring frosts and early autumn freezes. During the growing season the Wests operate a farm market at 3034 North Ridge Road and open their strawberry fields to pick-your-own aficionados early each June."
